The procession of the Lord of Miracles (Señor de los Milagros) is one of the most important religious festivity in Peru and one of the largest processions in the world. It takes place every October, when the image of the Christ is taken in procession through the streets of Lima. The legend began in 17th century Lima when a freed slave painted a mural of a crucified Christ, similar to the one in the photograph. In 1655 an earthquake destroyed most of the city but spared the mural. Since then the painted image has been a symbol of faith, hope and miracles for its devotees.
